1. How was AIK Foundation started? How was GSHN started?
The Alyson Ilene Kaplan Memorial Foundation was founded February 2003 by Donald and Joanne Kaplan in loving memory of their daughter Alyson Kaplan a twenty year old college student.

While vacationing in England Alyson found herself stranded when a winter storm interrupted her itinerary. Lost in area outside of London wholly unfamiliar to her, Alyson sought aid from someone she met at a train station she thought she could trust, who later murdered her.

The Global Safe Haven Network is the first program of the AIK Foundation and a testimony to the Kaplan family’s dedication to finding ways to reduce the risks to young travelers through education to promote safe travel, support for travelers, and protection in case of emergencies.

9. How can my business become a safe haven location?
To become a safe haven, the potential location must have a phone line that travelers can access the GSHN hotline with and staff members that are aware of the program and ready to aid a traveler, if needed. A storefront window in which a GSHN sticker can be placed to identify the safe haven is also highly desirable.
